Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, ASAP Rocky & Nicki Minaj Performances Added to 2012 MTV VMAs
YOU THINK MTV READ WHAT I POSTED ABOUT HOW BAD THE LINEUP FOR THIS YEAR’S VMAS WAS? Let’s just assume they did…because, well, I was right, anyway. It has been announced that Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, ASAP Rocky, and Nicki Minaj will all perform at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards, which air this Thursday at 8pm. They will join Frank Ocean, Green Day, Pink, One Direction, and Taylor Swift.
Wayne, who also performed last year (in leopard print women’s jeggings), is set to do the next single off his upcoming I Am Not A Human Being II, “No Worries”, which also appears on his Dedication 4 mixtape. Nicki Minaj is set to bring out a surprise guest for her slot. ASAP Rocky will (spoiler alert) join Rihanna for their new “Cockiness (Remix)“. Then the fact that 2 Chainz may get his own solo performance is absolutely incredible, considering where he was last year.
As much as I talk about how much of a shithole MTV (and by association the VMAs) has become, it’s still a great look for both Rocky and 2 Chainz to perform on the show. Kids don’t know shit anymore. It’s like that one line from The Newsroom about how with the Internet, there’s no more “browsing”; you’ve got to know what you want to find it. HOW IS A KID SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHAT TO LISTEN TO? That’s what MTV, or any other music channel really, used to be. With no set standard (even if the standards were wrong, or paid for, or whatever. they still existed), there’s no difference in a kid’s eyes between Drake and that dude down the street that has 2,000 YouTube views, because he may not realize the difference in the music and he doesn’t understand that Drake is significant culturally. (Though, I’m not saying he can’t like the kid down the street or that Drake is god because he’s famous/significant.) AHHHHHHHH. Okay, sorry.
If this move says anything, it’s that rap is clearly very relevant. You had to add four rappers to the performance list to get me to pay attention. Frank Ocean better step his game up. No sitting on a stool with a mic stand. Do something memorable. And where’s that goddamn “Pyramids” video?
