Chad Johnson Cut By Miami Dolphins on HBO’s ‘Hard Knocks’ (Video)
This is really hard for me. I’ve always been a big fan of Chad Johnson. I thought he was a terrific player in Cincinnati up until the last two seasons, and he brought back the “fun” element that was missing in football. Even when the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell banned endzone celebrations (really just because of Chad, also the Giants doing the Jim Jones jump shot), he found ways to be entertaining. The only time I think that side of him went overboard was when he did the Hall of Fame jacket stunt. Also, changing his name was a little too ridiculous.
On the football field, he’s always been great. He had his little arguments, both privately and through the media, with QB Carson Palmer and coach Marvin Lewis, but generally his on-field play backed it up. I always mark TJ Houshmandzadeh leaving as the end of the Bengals’ upward arc with Carson, Marvin Lewis, and Chad. We all know they would’ve gone far in the 06 playoffs when that idiot from the Steelers tore Carson’s knee on the first play of the Wild Card game (the Steelers would end up winning that year’s Super Bowl vs. the Seahawks). The last two years with Cinci were a little off, but I thought it was good that he got picked up by New England, but that didn’t work out either. It was reported that he couldn’t digest the offensive system. Yes, it was complicated, but also he didn’t have as structured of an offensive system with the Bengals, so he wasn’t used to it. Dropped balls and such didn’t help either. (Although, I really thought the hail mary at the end of this year’s Super Bowl would have gone to Chad and changed his whole career and made him and legend, but, alas, it didn’t happen.)
I don’t really have an opinion on his marriage, and we don’t really know everything about this domestic violence incident. But I do think Miami coach Joe Philbin acted a little too quickly by cutting Chad. This video is really painful to watch, and HBO really milked the shit out of it. It wasn’t like the scene from Moneyball where a player gets cut and the conversation was over. Philbin at least had a conversation with the guy, but it’s all just an unfortunate situation. Will he find another team? Who knows? There are teams that need WR help, but Chad’s recent track record don’t show that he’s absolutely necessary for a WR-less team. I mean, shit, Terrell Owens and Randy Moss are both on teams. Nobody’s excusing his act of violence against his wife. But as a fan of him on the field, it’s hard not to root for the guy.
