Marley Marl Plays Unheard Verse From “Mama Said Knock You Out”, Recreates Beat on Ableton (Video)

Dubspot caught up with legendary producer Marley Marl to talk about his and LL Cool J’s classic “Mama Said Knock You Out”. Watch him explain how he and LL first got together after the failure that was LL’s Walking Like a Panther album for the “Jingling Baby (Remix)” and then for the hit “Mama Said Knock You Out”. Marley Marl even breaks down the song for us and recreates the beat using Ableton Live (and not the old equipment he really used to make the song because who needs that junk anymore). He describes how the “C’mon man!” at the beginning of the song was LL yelling at the engineer to hurry up, and toward the end of the video Marl plays a never before heard verse that didn’t make the song. This is really a must-see for any hip hop fan. And my goodness, this man hasn’t aged a day.
