The SOPA OPERA: The RIAA’s Mitch Glazier Vs. Our Super Awesome Attorney Andrew Bridges
Remember SOPA and PIPA? Just because the bills effectively died (at least in this Congress) doesn’t mean it’s not a hot issue still being discussed. In February, The Copyright Society of the USA’s NY Chapter held a moderated debate titled “The SOPA OPERA: the Stop Online Piracy Act, the Protect IP Act, the OPEN Act and Related Recent Legislative Proposals: What was in the Bills, Why they Failed, and Where to Next.” During this event the RIAA’s Mitch Glazier went toe to toe with one of the top IP attorneys in the country, Andrew P. Bridges, of Fenwick & West LLP. (Disclaimer: Andrew is the attorney for this website.)
Our situation is referenced a few times in this. One thing is clear SOPA and PIPA are not regarded as dead by the RIAA and they are currently regrouping trying to figure out a strategy to get this bill through Congress without another uproar like that which occurred in the SOPA/PIPA hearings. If you thought the fight for the internet was over you’ve got another thing coming. They’re just re-grouping.
