Watch: Megaupload Founder Kim Dotcom Released On Bail
Mega Upload founder Kim Dotcom was granted bail and released from a New Zealand jail today after a judge determined no significant income was found and his ability to leave the country was “highly unlikely,” adding “The suspicion that Mr Dotcom is very wealthy is not evidence of further assets and cannot be used against him.” The remarks came as a response to prosecutors, working on behalf of the United States, who claimed that because Dotcom was very wealthy he probably had accounts they were not aware of. Four additional bank accounts had previously been located in Philippines, but they were empty. It’s been indicated The Crown will appeal the ruling.
One of the terms of Dotcom’s bail is that he is not allowed to have internet access that would allow him to put the website back up in a jurisdiction the US could not reach. He also may not have helicopters travel to the property, and he may not travel more than 80km. He must also give police 24 hour notice if he plans to leave the property except for medical emergency.
Upon being release Dotcom told reporters He just wanted to go home to his pregnant wife and children.
